Tease photo
Meet Vicki. By 6 p.m., she's just starting her day, as she dons her royal blue Jan-Pro shirt and a backpack vacuum. She launched this commercial cleaning business so she could afford to put her son through a private academy. Diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder, he seemed to fall behind in larger, public school classrooms.

Tease Photo - Girl Scout cookie sale memories
As a child, I sold Girl Scout cookies. We went door-to-door in our neighborhood. I always tried to outsell the rest of the girls and usually did. Well, one VERY windy day I was out collecting the money and had quite a bit in the big envelope, and a gust of wind came up and all I saw was my cookie money blowing in the air way above my head. I tried to get as much of it as I could, but saw it blowing over rooftops. I ran home crying to my parents. We rode around trying to find the rest and only found a few bills. Good ole Dad had to add about 50-something to the envelope. That's a time in my childhood life that I will never forget. Oh, and thanks, Dad, again!

Tease Photo - Increase your stock value at work
Everywhere you turn these days, the conversation is about the state of the job market. Pundits debate the recovery given still sky-high unemployment rates and people everywhere are more concerned than ever about finding jobs and keeping jobs. What does it take to make sure that your name is on the short list of people who are valued and viewed as "keepers" in the slippery world of business today?

Tease Photo - Girl's odyssey shows challenge of obesity battle
CHICAGO -- Paris Woods is hardly a poster child for the obesity epidemic. Lining up dripping wet with kids on her swim team, she's a blend of girlish chunkiness and womanly curves. In street clothes, the teen blends in with her friends, a fresh-faced, robust-looking All-American girl. That's the problem.

Tease Photo - Author moves on to latest chapter
Elizabeth Gilbert is not a messiah or guru. She is a writer, a person like other people who eat, pray, love, do stuff. Yet on a cold night in Oak Brook recently, the moment she speaks, you understand the hoopla, the adoration, the intense recognition she arouses in readers -- the reason that Oprah Winfrey, the first of three times she had Gilbert on her talk show, said, "I haven't been this excited since Bono was here! I am quivering now that you're here!"

Tease Photo - Be a smooth operator
The most important meal of the day and we're not hungry for it. "We" are the people whose appetite doesn't rise with the sun. I've never had the stomach for eating first thing in the morning, which means I'm usually ravenous by 10:30 or 11. Then, while trying to lose weight last year, I started drinking powdered shakes for breakfast. Whipped up cold and frothy, they were a treat I came to enjoy. Now, I'm missing them, and most of all, the energy boost they gave.

I wasn't a Girl Scout, which is almost embarrassing for a child of the '50s and '60s to admit. Why, I don't know. Maybe it was the fact that our neighborhood was loaded with kids. There were five of us girls about the same age, and we were a tight group into our teen years.

Tease Photo - What we're reading: Books about Abraham Lincoln
"Lincoln Reconsidered: Essays on the Civil War Era" by David Herbert Donald includes 12 brief essays on Abraham Lincoln that will change your ideas of our 16th president. The author has been highly respected by historians, especially since his definitive biography in 1995. The essays on Lincoln folklore, his defective education, Herndon and Mary Todd, and Lincoln and the Founding Fathers intrigued me and caused a rereading and rethinking.

Tease Photo - What we're reading and watching: 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life'
Barbara Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp, Camille Kingsolver's book caught my interest because of the idea of eating entirely locally for a year. It was a little like preaching to the choir -- no one has to tell me the negative impact of HFCS or GMO crops. I saw "Food, Inc." and support the same issues as Kingsolver and her family.

Tease Photo - What we're reading and watching: 'The Bluest Eye'
Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" is a complicated yet powerful story about race and beauty. Set in 1941, it looks at how young African-American girls deal with a society that sets the standard for beauty as blond and blue-eyed.

Tease Photo - Make sense of your photos in 4 weeks
Let's agree that we're not going to "organize" your photos. "Organize" is a chore. "Organize" is for Tupperware. Photos are for sharing, cherishing, showcasing. Still, yours are a mess. Thousands of images jumbled on your hard drive. Vacations bumping into holidays bumping into birthdays. Envelopes of prints sitting unframed, unmailed, unalbumed. Here's a plan to untangle the mess. In four weeks, you can sort and label photos, group them in categories and share and showcase them.
