Summer Kimmel-Borges had always told her mom everything, but she couldn't share this. It was too horrible. For months after she was raped, Kimmel-Borges found it difficult to talk about the attack. She blamed herself for what happened and lived in fear. Now, a year and nine months later, she is dedicated to speaking up on behalf of silent victims. The Summerville resident has started a nonprofit to help others who have been raped. She is also speaking publicly about the night that changed her life.

Tease Photo - Dad's lessons in facing dementia
The public room in the skilled nursing unit at Bishop Gadsden is like an ersatz hotel lobby, where the travelers are well-dressed, their white hair coiffed and gnarled hands manicured. The oldest residents relax in wheelchairs, perhaps grimacing at an inner conflict or staring blankly at the wide screen TV. Others flip through magazines and heckle the passers-by.

Tease Photo - What we're reading: Books about Abraham Lincoln
"Lincoln Reconsidered: Essays on the Civil War Era" by David Herbert Donald includes 12 brief essays on Abraham Lincoln that will change your ideas of our 16th president. The author has been highly respected by historians, especially since his definitive biography in 1995. The essays on Lincoln folklore, his defective education, Herndon and Mary Todd, and Lincoln and the Founding Fathers intrigued me and caused a rereading and rethinking.

Tease Photo - What we're reading and watching: 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life'
Barbara Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp, Camille Kingsolver's book caught my interest because of the idea of eating entirely locally for a year. It was a little like preaching to the choir -- no one has to tell me the negative impact of HFCS or GMO crops. I saw "Food, Inc." and support the same issues as Kingsolver and her family.
