Clemson seeking consistency against Wake Forest
By Travis Sawchik
CLEMSON — The bad news for Clemson basketball is it has rarely displayed consistency this season.
The good news for Clemson basketball is it has rarely flashed consistency this season, suggesting if the Tigers can begin putting complete games together, there is room for growth, room to climb up the ACC standings.
Clemson (10-9, 2-3 ACC) returns to play today hosting Wake Forest (11-9, 2-4) at 12 p.m. Even in Clemson’s last game, a win over Georgia Tech last Saturday, the Tigers nearly allowed a double-digit halftime lead to evaporate in the closing minutes.
Coach Brad Brownell said he is still waiting for his team to put two solid halves together, still waiting for his players to couple solid defensive play with offensive production.
"I want us to be more consistent," Brownell said. "We’ve shown signs of playing good basketball, but we haven’t always been able to carry it out for 40 minutes.
"For us to have any kind of success down the stretch, we have to be a more consistent team night in and night out. We’ve had some nights where we’ve played well and some nights where we haven’t played well on one side of the ball. We struggled offensively at Boston College; we struggled defensively for a while at Miami. Our margin for error is not very big, so we have to play well."
While Clemson is just 2-3 in the ACC, only five teams in the league have winning marks, and the Tigers are just 1½ games behind fourth-place N.C. State.
Clemson has shown it can play at high level and compete with some of the better teams in the ACC, handing second-place Florida State its only loss.
"There are a lot of teams that are similar," Brownell said. "There are couple teams that are better. There’s a lot of us that are still trying to figures things out early in the league race. The standings in a lot of leagues are jumbled up."
Brownell declined to get caught in talk about the ACC race on Friday.
"At this point in the season, there is no sense in focusing on (the standings)," Brownell said. "Focus on the process and playing week."
