Funeral arrangements set for Jack McCray
The life of Jack McCray, Charleston's jazz impresario who died this week, will be celebrated at a funeral scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
Preceding the funeral service, family, friends and musical colleagues are planning to process to the church, probably from the nearby Ansonborough neighborhood where McCray was born and grew up, according to Jazz Artists of Charleston.
A public viewing is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Monday at Harleston-Boags Funeral Home, 121 Calhoun St. A wake is at 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Mother Emanuel AME, 110 Calhoun St.
McCray was found dead Wednesday evening in his Coming Street apartment. He was 64.
He had long argued that Charleston is an important seat of jazz, boasting its own musical history and tradition, and he devoted much of his life to promoting that tradition and supporting the musicians who exemplified it.
On Sunday, Circular Congregational Church is dedicating its 6 p.m. Jazz Vespers to the memory of McCray. The event, featuring saxophonist Robert Lewis and keyboard player Gerald Gregory, is free and open to all.
