South Carolina inspector general resigns
BY JIM DAVENPORT
COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s first inspector general has resigned.
George Schroeder told The Associated Press on today that he resigned at the end of April after six weeks on the job. Schroeder had been named to the $110,000 per year post in March by Gov. Nikki Haley. She created it to find waste and fraud.
Schroeder said he resigned because he thinks a state law is needed to operate effectively. He said a law would clear up staffing and administrative questions. He also says the position should be independent of the governor and Legislature.
Schroeder used to head the Legislative Audit Council.
After the November election, Haley put Schroeder in charge of a panel to review state spending and suggest cuts. The group briefed Haley but produced no formal final report.
