Lierley, Tommerdahl win Lowcountry Splash

Staff report
Sunday, May 29, 2011

Zachary Lierley and Anna Tommerdahl won the 10th annual Lowcountry Splash on Saturday.

Lierley, 16, is a rising junior at Wando High School and competes on the Mount Pleasant Swim Club. He won the 2.4-mile open water swim in a time of 35 minutes, 46 seconds. His brother, Jonathon Lierley, who won the Splash in 2009, finished in third place on Saturday.

Tommerdahl, 23, of Charleston, broke the dominance of younger female swimmers in the Splash. The former varsity swimmer at the UNC Wilmington is currently studying for a masters in marine biology at the College of Charleston and swims with the Palmetto Masters, an adult swim team based at the Martin Luther King Jr. Pool.

Neither Lierley nor Tommerdahl knew with certainty that they had won until the finish because of the choppy conditions in Saturday's race.

In the Splash's "Over-Under" contest -- which goes to the person with the best combined times of the Cooper River Bridge Run and the Splash -- the winners were Jay Upchurch, 33, of James Island, and Kelsey Bristol, 24, of Charleston. Upchurch ran the Bridge in 32:07 and finished the Splash in 47:01, while Bristol's times were 43:45 and 45:51, respectively.
