WALTERBORO — A Columbia couple died Sunday after authorities say their vehicle was struck by a drunk driver on Interstate 95.

The wreck happened at 5:04 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 49, about four miles south of Walterboro, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.

Elaine Lavoie, 70, and Philip Lavoie, 74, of Columbia both died in the crash, Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said.

Troopers charged Christopher M. Gregg, 34, of Smyrna, Del., with two counts of felony DUI involving a death, Brouthers said.

Brouthers said Gregg was driving a 1992 Ford Mustang in the northbound lanes when he changed lanes and struck the Suburban driven by Elaine Lavoie. The Suburban ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Philip Lavoie, a passenger, died from multiple injuries. An autopsy will be done on his wife today.

It appears the couple were wearing their seatbelts, Harvey said.
