Ceremony to honor doctor, volunteer
FOLLY BEACH -- A Hometown Heroes ceremony tonight will honor Dr. Dilan Ellegala, whose work with health care professionals in Africa improved surgical procedures there.
Ellegala and Doyle Word, the volunteer director of Ellegala's foundation, Madaktari Africa, will receive awards at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Holiday Inn/Tides Hotel. The public is invited to the event, which will include a slide show and a talk about the work of Madaktari Africa.
Ellegala and Word live on Folly Beach. Their pioneering efforts in Africa were recently detailed by Post and Courier reporter Tony Bartelme, who traveled to Tanzania to report on Ellegala's work.
