Brad Van Liew departed Monday from Charleston in preparation for his third solo around the world sailing trip.

Van Liew set sail for France on his Open 60 racing yacht, Le Pingouin. He will race in the Velux 5 Oceans race that starts in France and covers nearly 30,000 nautical miles.

The race begins Oct. 17 and the first leg takes racers from La Rochelle, France to Capetown, South Africa. The remaining legs take sailors to Wellington, New Zealand and Salvador, Brazil, then to Charleston before finishing in France.

The Post and Courier will be following Van Liew's quest to win the race.
