Man charged in shooting death

Berkeley County investigators have charged a 21-year-old man in connection with a shooting death at a St. Stephen nightclub early Saturday.

Abraham Edward Medley, 21, of St. Stephen is charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful carrying of a weapon, said Dan Moon, public information officer for the county sheriff's office. Medley was being held at the county jail while he awaits a bond hearing, Moon said.

Medley is accused of shooting 21-year-old Derrick Doyle of St. Stephen during a 1 a.m. altercation at Lloyd's Place, a nightclub off Colonel Maham Drive, Moon said. Investigators did not disclose the nature of the dispute, and Moon said he could not discuss specifics surrounding Medley's actions or the charges against him.

Doyle was pronounced dead at Moncks Corner Medical Center, according to Bill Salisbury, Berkeley County chief deputy coroner. He would not say how many times Doyle was shot or where he was wounded.

After the shooting, some people loaded Doyle into a vehicle and drove him to the county's Emergency Medical Services station in St. Stephen. When they arrived, however, the learned the ambulance was out on another call, Salisbury said.

The people with Doyle then called 911 and arranged to meet an ambulance from Moncks Corner in the Santee Circle Community, Salisbury said. The ambulance retrieved Doyle and took him to the hospital, but doctors couldn't save him.
