The Post and Courier

About 400 people came out Thursday night to support Brad Van Liew (white shirt) in his solo sailboat race around the world — including his mother, Marcia Van Liew, Pepe Hernandez, godparent to his son and daughter, and his physician George Durst, who was taking a photograph of the trio at a bon voyage party at the Seabreeze Marina downtown. Van Liew has been testing the boat in Charleston Harbor all week, getting sunburned despite his slathering on sunscreen, which was a running joke through the night. Folks from around the state ate barbecue, listened to live music and toured Le Pingouin (background), Van Liew's Open 60 yacht. Van Liew is scheduled to leave over the holiday weekend for La Rochelle, France, the starting line of the 2010-11 Velux 5 Oceans Race, the race formerly known as the Around Alone. He will sail Le Pingouin alone from France to South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil and Charleston before finishing back in France. The effort marks his 3rd solo circumnavigation of the globe.
