2 die in separate wrecks

Two men have died in traffic wrecks in Berkeley County over the past few days.

Allen Johnson, 30, of Cross died Wednesday night after his car collided with a dump truck in the rural part of the county.

Johnson was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. at Medical University Hospital, Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

Cpl. Paul Brouthers from the S.C. Highway Patrol said Johnson's car crossed the center line and hit the dump truck.

Salisbury said Johnson was traveling north on Old Gilliard Road when he collided with the truck, which was heading south.

Johnson was pinned inside the vehicle, he said.

Sandridge firefighters removed him from the vehicle and he was flown to the hospital.

Johnson was wearing a seat belt, Salisbury said.

Brouthers said no charges were filed against the dump truck driver.

On Thursday morning, a 62-year-old man driving a mo-ped died after he was struck from behind by a car in Berkeley County.

The wreck happened about 6:15 a.m. in the Santee Circle community.

Salisbury said the mo-ped driver was traveling north on U.S. Highway 52 when he was struck from behind.

He was wearing a helmet and reflective vest at the time, Salisbury said.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Salisbury said he is withholding the man's name until his family can be notified.

The car was driven by Rose Marie Mizell, 40, of Summerville, Brouthers said.

The case is still under investigation. No charges have been filed so far, he said.
