Special suds available at Pig for a limited time
By Warren Wise
The Pig will be big on a special draft beer this holiday weekend.
Piggly Wiggly is offering draft-beer enthusiasts the opportunity to buy an extremely limited-edition beer at three supermarkets in metro Charleston before Labor Day.
Each store will feature one keg of the special brew made by Piggly Wiggly beer/wine specialist and sommelier Nick Long during his visit to Beer Camp at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in California. Once the kegs run dry, the specialty beer will never again be available, here or elsewhere.
The beer, called Ghidorah (pronounced Gee-doe-rah) after the three-headed monster from the Godzilla film series, got its name because Beer Campers used three kinds of hops, three kinds of malt and the beer was hopped three times.
At each location a second tap will provide another seasonal draft for slightly less adventurous customers. Customers may purchase growlers of either beer to take home and enjoy. Empty, reusable growlers will be available for purchase during the draft-beer events. Customers who already own growlers may bring them to be filled.
The beer will first be available 4-8 p.m. Friday at the store at 445 Meeting St. in Charleston, then from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Newton Farms in Freshfields Village at 130 Gardeners Circle between Kiawah and Seabrook islands, and finally from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the store at 1981 Riviera Drive in Mount Pleasant.
Separately, Piggly Wiggly has extended its "coupons for Greenbax" promotion, which was due to end Aug. 31, until Sept. 28. The promotion allows customers with a Pig Card to collect one Greenbax for every coupon they use, up to 10 each day.
In a related promotion that expires Sept. 7, customers can trade in Greenbax for gift cards to area retailers, at a rate of 5 Greenbax for a $10 gift card. That means someone who uses 10 coupons during a grocery shopping trip can earn enough Greenbax for $20 in gift cards, in addition to the money saved by using the coupons.
Consigned corner
The Daughters of St. Paul, a Catholic order, have opened a consignment shop called Lydia's Corner at Pauline Books and Media Center at 243 King St. in downtown Charleston. The volunteer-staffed fundraising endeavor features new and gently used upscale consigned and donated merchandise including antique furniture, new and vintage jewelry, silver, gowns, furs, art objects and more. It's open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Funds raised will pay for building renovations and an endowment for the sisters.

Going dark
A little over a year after moving from Daniel Island to Mount Pleasant, the Soda Water Grill in The Shoppes at Seaside Farms is no longer in business. The eclectic restaurant at 1960 Riviera Drive, which had been owned by Lara Byrns, Deanna Desmarais and Christina Kinney, closed Aug. 22, according to The Beach Co. , which owns the retail center.
Shot in the arm
Seasonal flu shots are now available at all Harris Teeter supermarkets for $25 with a VIC card or at no charge if you are a Medicare B, non-HMO recipient. The pneumococcal vaccine also is available for $60. Nurses with Mollen Immunization Clinics will administer the shots. Check your store for schedules. In the know?
