Man convicted of gun, drug charges

Thursday, September 2, 2010

A federal jury on Tuesday found a North Charleston man guilty on drug and gun charges.

Bernard Weiters Jr., 35, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison after a jury found him guilty of possessing more than 50 grams of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a weapon in connection to and in furtherance of a drug- trafficking crime.

Prosecutors said North Charleston police executed a search warrant at a house on Houston Street on July 1, 2009. As SWAT officers attempted to enter the home, Weiters pulled a gun from his waistband and slammed the door shut, prosecutors said. They say he fled the room and threw a .40-caliber handgun through a broken window.

Officers found Weiters in another room across the hall, bleeding. They recovered 58 grams of crack cocaine, 12 grams of powder cocaine, digital scales and other equipment used for manufacturing crack cocaine, according to the U.S. Attorney's office for South Carolina.

Weiters is expected to be sentenced in the next few months. He will remain in custody.
