Six Charleston cruises shelved as Mercury is repositioned
By Allyson Bird
Celebrity Mercury, the ship that made headlines when hundreds of passengers fell ill on three consecutive voyages from Charleston this year, will sail under a new name in Europe next year.
Six cruises that were scheduled to leave from Union Pier on the vessel next year will be canceled as a result of the change.
Celebrity Cruises announced today that the Mercury will become the second ship in the fleet of TUI Cruises — a joint venture between Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and TUI AG, which caters to the German market.
Mercury will be renamed Mein Schiff 2, which translates in English to My Ship 2.
The vessel is set to sail as the Mercury until Feb. 14, though Charleston's cruise calendar includes six calls on the ship after that date. Celebrity said customers who booked cruises after the changeover can cancel and get full refunds, or they can move their reservation to sailings from Baltimore between next Oct. 18 and Feb. 26, 2011. The only exception is a voyage that leaves Dec. 20.
Passengers who choose the second option will receive a $75 to $200 onboard credit, depending on the price of their rooms.
The Mercury's next scheduled call at the Port of Charleston is Oct. 31. It will set sail for the first time as Mein Schiff 2 in May 2011 in the Baltic and Nordic regions.
