Essay winner

Thomas S. Horton, winner of the Charleston Optimists 2010 Essay Contest, has won the Optimist District Essay Contest. His essay on "The Internet: Today's Evolution or Tomorrow's Menace" was judged with other essays from Optimist clubs in the state.

Horton received a $2,500 college scholarship. A resident of Moncks Corner, he is a senior at Berkeley High School.

Horton's essay has been entered in the Optimist International Essay Contest.

Volunteer award

Katie Stagliano of Summerville, a fifth-grader at Pinewood Preparatory School, recently was presented with a bronze medallion for her selection as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, which honors outstanding youth volunteers.

She was honored for donating to local soup kitchens more than 1,000 pounds of fresh produce from five vegetable gardens that she tends.

Arts school honors

Charleston County School of the Arts sophomore Angelica Halvarsson has won first place and Best of Show in the Department of Natural Resource's Reel Art Competition.

School of the Arts sophomore Weston DeWolff also received the same award for the DNR's Junior Duck Stamp competition. Another sophomore, Allesandra Acierno, has been named one of 10 finalists for a national competition in Washington, D.C.

Anderson honors

Several local students were named to the dean's list at Anderson University.

They are: Genevieve A. Hamilton of Charleston; Hillary M. Holder of Mount Pleasant; and Chaz M. Jones and Kathleen M. Meitzler, both of North Charleston.

Hofstra honors

Jade Keena of St. George has been named to the provost's list at Hofstra University in New York.
