Oratorical contest

Jordan Elum, a student at Charleston County School of the Arts, advanced to the South Carolina Zone Oratorical Contest representing the West Ashley Optimist Club contest. After winning the Zone 7 contest, Elum represented the Charleston Optimists in the district contest held in Columbia.

Elum won first place in the South Carolina District Optimist International boy's competition and was awarded a $2,500 scholarship to the college of his choice.

Emily Hart, a student at Charleston County School of the Arts, was among the runners-up in the Optimist district girl's competition.

The theme was "Cyber Communication - Progress or Problem?" The local students competed against boys and girls from across the state.

Moore Fellowship

Bradley Collins of Charleston, a senior majoring in computer engineering at Clemson University, has received the Warner O. Moore Fellowship from Alpha Lambda Delta, national honor society for first-year students.

Collins will receive $3,000 for the 2010-11 academic year. He plans to attend Stanford University to pursue a master's and Ph.D. in electrical engineering.

The award is one of 23 graduate fellowships given annually by Alpha Lambda Delta. The award is named for Warner Moore, who served as the first male district adviser on the group's National Council from 1981-84 and as the first male vice president from 1984-87.

CSU awards

Philip Amarendran and Emily Campbell, both of Charleston, recently attended Premiere Day at Charleston Southern University.

These prospective students have been awarded the Dr. Jairy C. Hunter Jr. Scholarship for $13,000 per year for four years. This presidential scholarship is the university's top academic award and is awarded to students with an SAT score of 1,200 or higher, or an ACT composite of 27 or higher, and a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Clemson honors

Ellen E. Neff, graduating senior at Clemson University, received the 2010 Marketing Distinction Award from the College of Business.

Recipients of this award have taken and earned a 4.0 in at least five Marketing courses, including Marketing Research or Marketing Strategy, and have a cumulative grade-point averaqge of 3.8. She also is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, honor society of the College of Business.

Phi Beta Kappa

David W. Gouzoules of Summerville and Laura M. Tonks of Charleston were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most honored of college honorary societies, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Each new member received a certificate and a Phi Beta Kappa key, the organization's symbol.

Art Institute grad

Ryan McNamara of Charleston has graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale with a Bachelor of Science in media arts and animation.
