Stroke screenings scheduled May 20
As part of Stroke Awareness Month in May, Trident Health System will offer free stroke screenings 9:15-11:30 a.m. May 20 at Trident Medical Center.
A stroke prevention lecture will follow at noon with Dr. Thomas Privett and Dr. Matthew Wallen. Screenings will include lipid profile with glucose, blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference, heart and vascular disease risk assessment, counseling and education on risk factors.

Walterboro fest slated May 14-15
The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society will host the fourth annual Walterboro Antiques, History and Arts Festival on May 14-15.
The society has joined with the city, Walterboro Merchants Association, Colleton County Arts Council, S.C. Artisans Center and Colleton Museum for the event.
The schedule will include an opening night barbecue at the Artisans Center, 318 Wichman St., on May 14 and will include whole hog barbecue, cash bar and music.
On May 15, there will be an antiques show with dealers from several states, appraisals, an Antique Tractors Show and Parade, historic carriage tours, Colonial Village, 2010 S.C. Watermedia Society Show, Lowcountry Juried Art Show, S.C. Artisans Center Folk Life Celebration, and the farmers market.
A Vintage Air and Car Show also will be offered. Free shuttle service will be available for the air show and Colonial Village. Most events are free. Tickets are available for the barbecue ($10) at Downtown Books and Espresso, Artisans Center and antiques shops.

Armed Forces Day fundraiser on tap
American Legion Post 208 will hold an Armed Forces Day fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. May 15 at Outback Steak House on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
On the menu will be chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, iced tea and desserts. Cost: $6 adults, $3 kids under 10, and free for under 5. Calvin Taylor will provide live entertainment; balloon animals and magic by Van Doren.
Green Living Fest slated May 15-16
The third annual Green Living Festival will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 15-16 at the Ladson Exchange Park.

Small business seminar slated
SCORE counselors will hold a two-night Small Business Resource Seminar for entrepreneurs and new business owners May 18-19 at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, 4500 Leeds Ave., Suite 100, North Charleston.
The seminar runs 6-9 p.m. and costs $65 if registered in advance, or $75 at the door. Topics will be business planning, cash flow, small business financing, community resources, marketing and legal planning.

Child's shoe box program on tap
Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 7396 Rivers Ave., will host an Operation Christmas Child Celebration at 7 p.m. May 20. The program is a project of Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse.

Arzu rugs founder to speak at event
Trident United Way's Women's Leadership Council presents an evening with Connie K. Duckworth, founder of Arzu Studio Hope, a nonprofit that sells rugs made by Afghan women.
The event will be 5:30-8 p.m. May 13 at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, 161 Calhoun St.. It is free. There will be rugs for sale.
Arzu, which means "hope" in Dari, is an innovative model of social entrepreneurship that helps Afghan women and their families by sourcing and selling the rugs they weave.
Senior volunteers plan fundraiser
The Senior Companion Program of Charleston Area Senior Citizens will present the May Senior Music Festival 7-10 p.m. May 14 at CASC, 259 Meeting St.
Music will include the '20s and '30s, standards, gospel, vintage bluegrass, classical, jazz, Dixieland and more.
Tickets: seniors and students $10; general admission $20.

'Hunley' play through June
A play, "Romancing The Hunley: The Story of the Hunley and its Brave Crews," is at the Powder Magazine, 79 Cumberland St. The play will continue Sundays through June. Tickets: $15. Call 722-9350 or www.powdermag.org.
