Haley, Scott win straw poll
By Robert Behre
About 200 Berkeley County Republicans took a straw poll Saturday to weigh in on their party's most visible primary races.
State Rep. Nikki Haley, R-Lexington, proved to be the most popular gubernatorial candidate, while state Rep. Tim Scott, R-North Charleston, won the 1st Congressional District straw poll.
The primary elections are June 8.
Haley received 69 votes, besting Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, who each received 50. S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster received 46.
Scott, whose legislative district is partly in Berkeley County, got 82 votes, while former Charleston County School Board member Larry Kobrovsky came in second with 55. Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond came in third with 41, while Stovall Witte, U.S. Rep. Henry Brown's former chief of staff, got 14. Mount Pleasant Town Councilman Ken Glasson got 12 votes. None of the other four candidates received more than nine votes.
In the Berkeley County supervisor race, Brown got 118 votes, more than his opponents Hanahan Mayor Minnie Blackwell and current Supervisor Dan Davis got combined.
Other straw poll victors and their races include: Curtis Loftis, treasurer; Bill Connor, lieutenant governor; Jim DeMint, U.S. Senate; Alan Wilson, attorney general; Richard Eckstrom, comptroller general; Nancy Harrelson, 6th Congressional District; and Mick Zais, Superintendent of Education.
