Kendle, Lavelle inducted
By Philip Bowman
Summerville's Teresa Kendle and Bishop England's Tommy Lavelle were recently inducted into the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Kendle, who is believed to be the only active coach in the United States with at least 500 victories in both basketball and volleyball, has 28 years of experience.
She owns a 533-170 record. She has led the Green Wave to 14 region championship and four appearances in the Class AAAA state championship game.
She has more than 600 victories as a volleyball coach and has led the Green Wave to two state titles. The Green Wave has finished runners-up six times. She was only the sixth coach in state history to reach 600 wins in volleyball.
Lavelle is best known for coaching at his alma mater, Bishop England. He was hired in time for the 1977 season and coached the Bishops for two decades, compiling a 287-187 record.
He coached for nine years at Chicora prior to taking the BE job and had only one losing season at the old North Charleston school.
Lavelle starred at Bishop England in the late 1950s and was an All-American at Western Carolina. He was drafted in the third round by the New York Knicks in 1964. Willis Reed was the Knicks' second pick that draft. Lavelle opted not to play.
Other coaches inducted into the Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class were Artie Knight, Shannon Wilkerson, Louie Golden, Harry Parone, Taft Watson, Cy Szakacsi, Sudie Love, John Thames, Eddie Rice, Boots Bandy, William Roberts, Bob Johnston, H.B. Bee Rhame, Charles Shealy, Moody Garner, Mac Quattlebaum, Hulan "Pop" Small, George Glymph, Fred Senter, John Smith, Farrell Zissette, William Johnson, William C. Lewis, Joy Couch, Patsy Rhodes, Carl Stegall and Pat Hewitt.
Woodland wonders
The Woodland baseball team set a school record for victories in a season when the Wolverines defeated Burke on Friday night. The victory gave Woodland a 7-1 record.
The Wolves' only loss was a 7-2 defeat to defending Class AA state champion Bishop England.
The Wolves are coached by Rusty Charpia, who is in his first year as baseball coach at the school. He is an assistant football coach at the school.
Charpia played football and baseball at Clemson. He was a defensive back on three Tigers football teams that went to bowl games from 1986-88. He also was an accomplished shortstop for the baseball team and played in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization after being taken in the 38th round of the 1989 draft.
The Wolves, who play Cane Bay today, have six players in the lineup who are batting over .400.
Cody Way leads the way with a .531 batting average with 14 hits and 14 RBIs in 32 at-bats. Martin Connelly is batting .500 with four of his 10 hits going for extra bases. He leads the team with six stolen bases. Jeffrey Westbury and Matthews Scott are batting .476 and .462, respectively.
Johnnie Marchant is batting .423 and has a .730 slugging percentage. He's proving to be the best pitcher with a 4-1 record and a 1.91 ERA. He's allowed only 15 hits in 22 innings, striking out 34 batters and walking only three.
