Why symphony stopped the music
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra exists because of the generosity of the Charleston community. Thank you for your support throughout the years by attending performances, volunteering time and contributing financial resources.
In these challenging economic times, I doubt the decision to suspend operations and cancel performances for the remainder of the season is a complete surprise.
Unfortunately, many performing arts organizations are struggling financially and have also seen significant reductions in operating revenues, somewhat from ticket sales, but particularly from donations.
Every year, the CSO relies on generous donations from individuals, companies and local governments for over 50 percent of its annual budget. This private financial support is the economic reality and the monetary backbone of performing arts organizations in the United States.
But, the economic climate has changed drastically. This year, donations from the top 10 major donors to the CSO are down by over 60 percent, which is a reduction of over $400,000. We have simply run out of money needed to fund operating expenses, which are primarily payroll expenses.
Our decision has not been an easy one. It significantly and directly impacts the lives of more than 40 people, musicians, staff and their families. It also has negative effects on our affiliate organizations and the entire community. The board of directors has taken this decision very seriously, but there was no other option.
This cash flow crisis means we must take a hard look at the structure of the organization to see how we can fashion a more financially sustainable operating model. We are committed to work diligently and quickly to find a solution that will enable the orchestra to serve the Charleston community with wonderful music for many years to come. We welcome your thoughts as we tackle this restructuring.
Again, I thank you for your support throughout the years. We look forward to many more seasons for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and appreciate your understanding during this very difficult period.
