Police still looking into fatal accident

Staff report
Sunday, March 21, 2010

North Charleston police continue to investigate a crash that killed a 7-year-old boy Friday night, but no charges have been filed against the driver who struck the child, authorities said.

Devonte Bonaparte of North Charleston was playing in a yard on Burton Lane around 7:45 p.m. and was struck after he apparently ran into the street, police public information officer Spencer Pryor said.

The child was struck by an SUV driven by a 21-year-old woman, Pryor said.

Emergency workers rushed the boy to Medical University Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the county coroner's office.

A neighbor told The Post and Courier that residents have complained for some time about drivers speeding through the area.

Pryor said police are still investigating the incident but that it does not appear that speed was a factor in the fatality.

He said he was not aware of police receiving complaints about speeding on Burton Lane. Police have not released the identity of the person driving the car that struck the child.
