Cougars beaten by UNCG in softball twinbill

The College of Charleston (8-14, 0-2) dropped two games to UNC Greensboro (10-14, 3-2) to open its first Southern Conference softball series of the season, losing 11-7 in 11 innings and 5-1 at Patriots Point on Saturday.

The Spartans broke a 6-all tie with five runs in the 11th in Game 1. The Cougars' Kelly Dillon had two RBIs and Kristi Woodall ha two hits with two runs scored. Kasie Meeks took the loss, working the last seven innings.

In the nightcap, UNCG scored five runs in the first. For the Cougars, Amber Shifflett had two hits and Katie Forbes homered for their only run. Terri Mesko went the distance, yielding six hits in taking the loss. The series wraps up at 1 p.m. today.

Track and field

Two East Coast Track and Field Academy members, both students at Stratford High School, had notable performances at the Walt Disney Invitational meet in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Sophomore Brandon Gourdine won a gold medal in the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.34 seconds), and senior Brenesha Heckney won a sixth-place metal in the girls 100-meter dash (13.23).
