Dogs thrower gets honor

The Citadel's Christopher Castagno was named the Southern Conference men's field athlete of the week.

A junior, Castagno broke the school record in the hammer with a throw of 163 feet at the Palmetto Classic outdoor meet. His first-place mark also ranks him second in the conference in the event.

College softball

Charleston Southern (15-14-1) dropped a doubleheader at USC Upstate (13-4), falling 3-1 and 5-3. The Buccaneers were held to two hits in Game 1 and stranded nine runners in the nightcap. Megan Hall led CSU's offense, going 4 for 4 on the day and drawing three walks.

Sondra Vetter took the loss in the first game, and Caitlin Allen was the loser in Game 2.

College football

Coastal Carolina takes on a Football Bowl Series foe for the third straight season, opening its schedule at West Virginia on Sept. 4.

The Chanticleers host Charleston Southern on Nov. 20 as part of their Big South Conference schedule.
