Conroy endorses Rex in governor's race
COLUMBIA — Best-selling author Pat Conroy has endorsed South Carolina schools chief Jim Rex for governor.
Conroy publicly supported the Democrat during a fundraiser Sunday in Beaufort.
This isn’t the first time the author has supported Rex. The Fripp Island resident spoke at Rex's gala the night before he took over as state education superintendent in 2007.
Rex says he used to assign "The Water is Wide" to his English students, to teach them about education inequities. Conroy wrote that 1972 book based on his teaching experiences as the first white teacher on isolated Daufuskie Island.
Conroy’s other books include "The Price of Tides," "The Lords of Discipline," and "The Great Santini."
Rex faces Sens. Vincent Sheheen of Camden and Robert Ford of Charleston in the June 8 primary.
