Legislators to discuss driver vision tests

COLUMBIA — South Carolina legislators will discuss doing away with a requirement for driver's license vision tests every five years.

The House's transportation subcommittee on Wednesday will discuss requiring vision tests for drivers under 65 only when they renew their licenses every 10 years.

The state adopted a 10-year license renewal system in 2003 but still required drivers to submit to vision tests every five years and imposed a $50 fine for drivers who didn't comply.

The Department of Motor Vehicles says it has not enforced the requirement and no one is complying with the vision test law.

Drivers 65 and older have to show every five years that they can see well enough to drive when they go to renew their licenses.
