Turbine parts maker expanding to Summerville area

A German company that makes anti-friction rings used in wind turbines is investing $47 million to open a plant in Dorchester County.

Gremsdorf-based IMO Group plans to create 190 jobs in McQueen Industrial Park, it was announced today.

The company plans to begin operation in July.

In seeking its first U.S. home, IMO said it focused on locations with ample trained workers within three hours of a major seaport, with access to an airport and with a suitable building that could be occupied immediately. The company said it will import and export goods through the Port of Charleston and will serve multiple markets from its Dorchester plant, including the United States, Europe and Asia.

Company officials acknowledge that a recent grant for a wind turbine testing facility, awarded to Clemson University’s Restoration Institute on the former Navy base, was a factor in IMO’s decision to locate in the Charleston region.
