Charleston considers anti-texting law
By David Slade
Charleston has joined a growing list of South Carolina towns and cities considering new regulations to prohibit texting while driving.
"I believe that an ordinance would warn people and discourage them from doing something dangerous," Mayor Joe Riley told City Council members at a meeting tonight.
The mayor said the city's legal team is crafting an ordinance council could soon consider. Council members generally agreed that sending or reading text messages while driving is dangerous, but some raised questions about enforcement, or the need for a new law.
Mount Pleasant is also considering an anti-texting law, which was approved by a Town Council committee last week. The city of Clemson banned sending or reading text messages or e-mail while driving on Feb. 15, though that law hasn't taken effect yet.
