ST. GEORGE -- A man and his 5-year-old grandson were killed in a five-car crash in Orangeburg County late Saturday just hours after the man had watched the high school basketball that he loved.

Victor Felder, 56, loved the game, his family said, and he didn't care who played. He'd driven to Columbia for the state championships to pass that love on to his grandson, Isaiah Johnson. Both were from St. George.

"My dad was awesome," said Victoria Johnson, Felder's daughter and also Isaiah's mother. "Really, really a family man."

Felder had been a coach for little league in St. George, where he lived his entire life. He also worked with a Goose Creek aluminum company for the past 26 years, Johnson said.

Isaiah attended the Big Top Child Center in Laurel, Md. He played soccer.

She doesn't known the specifics of what caused the crash.

"I just know there was a terrible car accident." The crash happened on Interstate 26 about five miles north of Orangeburg.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson said seven people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The crash is under investigation, but Robinson said the chain-reaction started when Felder's pickup truck hit an empty car trailer being pulled by a van.

Robinson said Felder and Johnson died at the scene.
