After lying low since the sale last summer of Grubb&Ellis|Barkley Fraser, J. Miles Barkley has re-emerged.

The real estate veteran has launched The Barkley Co. , which specializes in commercial real estate management and related brokerage and development services.

"Most real estate firms view property management as grunt work," he said. "Yes ... it is not as glamorous, but it's the most critical element in retaining the long-term value of an asset."

He said he plans to focus on small- to mid-sized local clients. Based at 278 Meeting St., the five-person firm has expertise in banking, accounting, law, construction, and public service.

"Success will be based on our ability to manage for value over time," he said. "If we can't offer a client a win-win solution, then we will likely pass on the opportunity."

About 20 years ago, Barkley and longtime business partner Chris Fraser co-founded The Barkley Fraser Co. They parted ways last year after selling the commercial brokerage and development firm to what is now Grubb&Ellis|WRS.

"We're coming out of the gate lean and hungry, with our eyes wide open," Barkley said of his new venture. "There are a lot of property owners who need help with their real estate holdings."
