“Army Wives” cast member Sally Pressman, 28, of Los Angeles celebrates winning an award for fourth place in her age group at the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series on May 23.

Cast members of Lifetime network's "Army Wives" swam in the murky water of James Island County Park, dodged the bumps and potholes of Folly Road, and finished it all off with two hot loops of running.

Those participating in the May 23 triathlon were actors Sterling Brown (who plays "brilliant psychiatrist" Roland Burton), Sally Pressman ("sassy mom" Roxy LeBlanc) and Drew Fuller (Sgt. Trevor LeBlanc), as well as assistant director Sebastian Mazzola and sound boom operator Jenny Elsinger.

They may have come and gone if it hadn't been for Pressman winning an age group award for females 25-29 (with a time of 1:20:48), says Race Director Paul King, who knew they were participating in the race but didn't want to call attention to it.

The idea for them to do the triathlon stemmed from Brown, who challenged them earlier this spring.

Granted, while actors in a soap opera-ish drama such as "Army Wives" need to be in shape, there's a difference between working out to look good and being fit enough to be knocked around in the water, hammer 12-plus miles on the bike and gut out a 5K run. They all finished, and Fuller put in a fairly respectable 1:13:42.

What struck me about this is that they managed to fit the training into a very busy work schedule and had fun doing it.

"We had the best time," says Pressman, "from training for it to going to do it."

Also interesting was the reason why Pressman did not think she'd do another triathlon anytime soon.

"The biking, it built up my quads a lot and I can't have that. As an actress, I have to wear skimpy skirts and tops and can't be all bulked up. ... I need to be tight and small."

Pressman, however, does have another athletic goal: "I'm setting my sights on a marathon."

So the take-away from all this? You can fit fitness into your schedule. Set goals and achieve them. After all, "stars are just like us."
