Woman convicted of identity theft

Friday, July 30, 2010

Stolen identities and nearly $200,000 in student loan applications led to the conviction of a former North Charleston woman on Thursday.

Shirley T. Watson, 25, of Columbia, was convicted in federal court of unlawful use of a Social Security number and identity theft, according to a U.S. Attorney news release.

Watson was sentenced to 27 months in prison and three years supervised probation. She also was ordered to pay $86,930 in restitution.

When she lived in North Charleston, Watson used the names and Social Security numbers of other people to apply for a total $189,680 in student loans from three private lenders. She was able to secure $86,930 of those loans, according to the release.

Watson also used the other people's identities to apply for credit cards, authorities said.
