Clemson reports violations
By Travis Sawchik
CLEMSON -- Clemson athletics revealed a nearly spotless drug test record Thursday, along with seven secondary NCAA violations.
From July 1, 2009 to June 30, 722 drug tests were conducted on Clemson student athletes with no positive results for steroids, marijuana, alcohol or cocaine, according to a university memo.
Three student-athletes tested positive for a banned substance, which the report says were amphetamines related to prescription drugs to treat illness. There are no penalties for such positive tests, according to university spokesperson Tim Bourret.
The athletic department also revealed secondary NCAA violations occurring from March 2 to July 6.
The "level II" violations are not serious in nature, and three included violations involving food.
One student notified the compliance office of a local restaurant advertising 10 percent discounts to student-athletes, with no discounts available for regular students.
Another violation included an "impermissible benefit of $36" for several students involving a meal. The assistant coach received a letter of admonishment.
A third food-related violation regarded a $6 meal allowed after a team returned to campus following a road trip.
Other violations included pictures of two current student athletes on a coach's privately owned camp website, a camp-related e-mail to a sophomore in high school that would initiate the recruiting process and an incorrect scholarship renewal letter.
Clemson releases its NCAA secondary twice a year in compliance with Freedom of Information Act requests.
