Motorists stand outside their cars after an accident on Interstate 26 eastbound this morning. The accident has caused a severe backup as commuters head in to work.

Four wrecks involving 11 vehicles backed up rush-hour traffic for more than an hour on Interstate 26 this morning.

Three wrecks involving eight cars were reported in the eastbound lanes about 8 a.m. between the Spruill Avenue exit and the Rutledge Avenue exit, according to Charles Francis, public information officer for Charleston police.

Those wrecks were caused by motorists following too closely, Francis said. Five people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Among those vehicles was a firetruck responding to the initial wreck. The driver of the firetruck was not charged. The truck sustained minor damage, according to Mark Ruppel, public information officer for the fire department.

At 9:15 a.m., just as authorities were clearing those wrecks, a fourth wreck involving three vehicles was reported in the same spot, about a mile from the Rutledge Avenue exit. Francis said that wreck was caused by motorists rubber-necking.

Police issued multiple citations, he said.

All lanes are open now.
