Passenger killed in I-95 accident
One person was killed and three injured Saturday when a motor home crashed on Interstate 95.
The accident happened just before 6 p.m. when Louis Rivers of St. George lost control of the motor home while driving south, according to Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The motor home went off the road and into the median, where it struck several trees and caught on fire.
Rivers and a passenger, Douglas Washington, were ejected from the vehicle. Washington, 40, of Santee was killed in the crash.
Rivers and another passenger, Stephanie Powell, 40, were taken to MUSC by helicopter. Washington's wife, Hope, 39, was taken to Colleton Regional Medical Center.
The collision is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Man wounded in Five Points
Columbia police are investigating a shooting early Saturday in Five Points, the latest violence in the shopping and entertainment village near the University of South Carolina.
The victim was shot in the shoulder, according to city spokesman Brick Lewis. Police think the man was a bystander and not a target, Lewis said. The incident happened in the 700 block of Harden Street, in the heart of Five Points.
Witnesses were unable to describe the shooter, police said. It is unclear whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle.
Lewis said the victim was walking past Natural Vibrations , a retro clothing and decor store, when shot about 3 a.m. The store was closed at that hour.
"I tell you, I don't know what's going on," store manager Tracy Wilds said. "It's getting dangerous out there."
Wilds said she was told a half-dozen shots were fired.
Drowning under investigation
BLACKSBURG -- A South Carolina coroner is investigating the death of a 49-year-old woman who drowned in the Broad River.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release that Teresa Ann Laney of Rock Hill died Friday near Blacksburg. An autopsy showed Laney drowned, but Fowler said he would await toxicology results before making a final ruling on her death.
Laney and a friend were preparing to paddle out in an inflatable kayak when Laney said she was going to get in the water to cool off. Laney's friend checked on her after a few minutes and she was gone.
Others boating on the river spotted Laney floating a few feet from shore and called 911.
Laney was in about five feet of water when she was pulled from the river and CPR was started.
