Graham to try new angle to get port earmark
The Senate Appropriations Committee didn't add in $400,000 to study deepening the Port of Charleston's shipping channel, and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said Thursday that he now will try to include the money when the Energy and Water appropriations bill hits the Senate floor.
"The earmark is a relatively small dollar amount in a nearly $3 trillion federal budget.
However, it carries huge importance for the future of the Port of Charleston and thousands of jobs in our state," Graham said.
"We literally have tens of thousands of jobs across South Carolina and millions of dollars in business riding on this decision," he said.
Port officials and businesses who depend on it are keeping a close watch on what happens next in Washington.
"Obviously, we're going to be working this pretty hot and heavy next week and into the future," S.C. State Ports Authority spokesman Byron Miller said.
