Is Charleston the best tennis town in America?
Staff and wire reports
Local tennis officials and enthusiasts say yes, and they are out to prove it.
The push is on to get out the vote in the USTA's "Best Tennis Town" in America contest. Charleston is among 10 finalists for the prestigious honor and the $100,000 prize that comes with it.
The deadline to vote in the online contest is noon Monday. Go to besttennistown.com where Charleston is listed along with Atlanta, Clearwater, Fla., Snow Hill, N.C., Delray Beach, Fla., Beaverton, Ore., Rome, Ga., Richmond, Va., Rosemount, Minn., and Manchester Center, Vt. Each of the 10 finalists is listed on the website with its own video and vote button.
Gone from fishin'
A Tennessee man on probation for a dozen hunting violations has been sent to jail for nearly two years after he was caught fishing under a false name in neighboring Georgia.
Georgia wildlife agents were tipped by their Tennessee counterparts that 31-year-old Kurt Wesley Ellis was fishing for trout in north Georgia with a license obtained under a false name.
Ellis was banned from hunting or fishing on state property for at least 20 years after pleading guilty last year to 12 hunting violations. He served a short jail stint and was on probation.
Rose's bat auctioned
The black Mizuno bat that Pete Rose used to get his final hit has been auctioned for $158,776, well below what was expected.
Rose used the bat for hit No. 4,256 in 1986, the major league record.
Lelands.com auctioned the bat and expected it to fetch a bigger price. The tough economy and Rose's controversies -- he's got a lifetime ban for betting on baseball -- likely held down the price. The record for an auctioned bat is $1.3 million, paid for one that Babe Ruth used to hit his first homer at Yankee Stadium.
