Goose Creek officer recovering
By Paul Bowers
GOOSE CREEK Police Officer Robert Edwards Jr. is recovering from the multiple gunshot wounds he suffered while responding to a domestic disturbance, said his family's attorney.
Charleston attorney David Aylor said Edwards recognized his family Wednesday at Medical University Hospital when his medications wore off.
He also said Edwards' internal bleeding had stopped and that he was breathing mostly on his own after spending some time on a breathing machine with a punctured lung.
Authorities say 33-year-old Codrick Delmaire Bass on Monday night came out on his front porch at 111 Iris St. and fired a 12-gauge shotgun multiple times at Edwards, a 20-year police veteran. The buckshot hit Edwards in his hand, chest and below his eye, and Aylor said doctors are considering doing surgery on Edwards' hand.
"There's definitely been some relief, particularly today, and the doctors feel good about the situation as a whole," Aylor said.
Aylor said Edwards' family was in good spirits.
"They're standing strong and doing well and are very appreciative of all the support from not just Goose Creek but from all the Charleston community as a whole."
