25 workers accused of forged documents at SC base

SUMTER — Federal authorities detained more than two dozen workers who tried to enter an Air Force base in South Carolina with forged identification.

Multiple media outlets reported 25 undocumented workers were detained Wednesday as they tried to enter Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter to work on construction projects.

A spokesman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement says two workers were being held as fugitives at the Charleston County jail. The spokesman did not know the charges.

Spokesman Temple Black says the other 23 workers were released and will have a hearing later.

Contractor Caddell Construction Co. of Montgomery, Ala., said it is cooperating with investigators. The men were working for Palacio Drywall of Cornelius, N.C.. There was no answer to a phone call placed with the company early Friday.
