MUSC tower honored
CHARLESTON - The two-year-old Ashley River Tower at the Medical University of South Carolina was ranked Wednesday as one of the 20 most beautiful hospitals in the nation.
Soliant Health, a health care company specializing in staffing, released the results of its second annual 10,000-vote online poll, with the Ashley River Tower coming in at 19th.
San Diego's Sharp Memorial Hospital received the top spot.
A blog post at Soliant's website said of the Ashley River Tower that "this East Coast facility sports classic examples of compelling institutional architecture."
The $275 million facility opened in February 2008. It treats patients with cardiovascular and digestive diseases. It also treats oncology patients.
Byron Edwards, vice president and principal for LS3P Associates, the company that designed the Ashley River Tower, said he was pleased to hear of the hospital's recognition.
He said he still hears from MUSC administrators who are happy with the way the building turned out.
His wife was even swept up in the hospital's aesthetics when she went in for minor surgery.
"Her priority was getting the best view," he said. "My priority was getting the best care."
LS3P Associates also was a recipient of the design award last year from the South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
