Gresham Barrett drops campaign ad lawsuit
COLUMBIA — Former South Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Gresham Barrett has dropped a lawsuit against a group that ran ads during the campaign.
The State newspaper reported Thursday that Barrett and some of his donors have dropped the lawsuit against ReformSC, a group founded to support Gov. Mark Sanford’s agenda.
The ads promoted state Rep. Nikki Haley, who won the GOP nomination in a June 22 runoff against Barrett. The ads featured video of Haley and called her South Carolina’s new conservative leader.
Barrett contended ReformSC coordinated with Haley’s campaign, making the ads illegal. A judge ordered the ads off the air.
Barrett’s campaign asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit, which was granted Wednesday.
ReformSC chairman Pat McKinney says the ads were always legal.
