Another GOP candidate joins race
6 Republicans, 3 Dems vying for Brown's seat
By Robert Behre
Former Charleston County School Board member Larry Kobrovsky said Thursday that he will seek the GOP nomination for the 1st Congressional District seat, bringing the total of announced Republicans to six.
Kobrovsky, 55, said his legal career has focused on constitutional law and addressing "the excesses of political correctness."
"Congress is going beyond what the Constitution allows with the economy and other things, and I think they need to be reined in," he said.
U.S. Rep. Henry Brown's Jan. 4 decision not to seek re-election has flooded the field, at least on the Republican side. Announced candidates include Isle of Palms City Councilman Ryan Buckhannon, Charleston businessman Carroll Campbell, GOP activist Katherine Jenerette of North Myrtle Beach, Charleston County Councilman and lawyer Paul Thurmond, and former Brown aide Stovall Witte.
State Rep. Tim Scott of North Charleston and others also are closely eyeing the race.
Three Democrats also are in the race: commercial pilot Robert Burton of Mount Pleasant, businessman Robert Dobbs of Georgetown and retired accountant Dick Withington of Horry County.
Kobrovsky said his legal experience is what separates him from the GOP field. "The truth is, of all the people, there wouldn't be much difference in how we vote," he said. "It's what we would bring there in terms of our life experience."
Kobrovsky previously served on the Charleston County School Board from 1993 to 1998 and also served as a charter member of South Carolina's Statewide Charter School Board. He filed a successful legal challenge that prompted the school district to end racial quotas at Buist Academy.
Kobrovsky said his service on the school board opened his eyes to the realities of political correctness, and "that's what started me on my path to constitutional law," he said.
He also cited immigration as another issue he feels strongly about. "I think if you can become a citizen by breaking the law, it devalues it for all of us. I think that's a core issue," he said.
