Head2Head Trivia

Groundhog Day coming

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Groundhog Day is just around the corner, and on Feb. 2, we'll learn whether we can expect an early spring or several more weeks of winter. After the brutally cold temperatures in early January, let's hope the groundhog decides on spring. Last week's upset winner, John Scovall, is going up against grad student Kaitlin Marks.

QUESTIONS

  • What European settlers brought the tradition to Pennsylvania of using an animal to forecast the weather?
  • When was the first official Groundhog Day celebrated?
  • What is the name of the official groundhog?
  • Where is the groundhog's burrow located where he comes out to look for his shadow on Feb. 2?
  • How many teeth do groundhogs have?
  • Name the comedian who starred in the 1993 movie "Groundhog Day?"
  • What job does his character have in the movie?
  • What song is playing on the radio every morning he wakes up on Feb. 2?
  • How frequently has the groundhog been right in predicting the weather? Answer with a percentage.
  • So, if the groundhog see his shadow, how many more weeks of winter will we have?

SCOVALL’S ANSWERS

  • I'm trying to remember who settled there. Is it German?
  • This is definitely just a guess ... 1899.
  • Punxsatawney Phil.
  • It's something Knob.
  • .30.
  • Bill Murray.
  • He did the weather.
  • I have no idea.
  • .84 percent
  • If he sees his shadow, that means six more weeks of winter.

MARKS’ ANSWERS

  • Dutch.
  • .1876.
  • Does it still count even if the spelling is off? Punksatawney Phil.
  • Gobbler's Knob.
  • .16, although I don't know why I'd think that.
  • Bill Murray starred in it.
  • Meteorologist.
  • Oh, that's a hard one. I don't remember the song playing.
  • I'll go high and say 90 percent
  • Six.

CONCLUSION

Another upset. Current trivia champ Scovall loses by a single question to Marks, who was surprisingly knowledgeable about Punxsutawney Phil. She'll return in a week to defend her new title. In the meantime, here's hoping the little guy doesn't see his shadow.
