Environmental groups sue to stop Navy sonar range

The U.S. Navy is trying to build a massive sonar training range off the Southeast coast before it knows what impact using the range could have on calving right whales, an endangered species, a dozen environmental groups claim in a lawsuit filed today.
The groups, including the Charleston-based Coastal Conservation League and the Southern Environmental Law Center, would like to see the range operated with seasonal restrictions and with ships adhering to the federal "ship strike" rule that requires larger vessels to slow down along the whales' coastal migration route.
The Navy had not yet received or reviewed the lawsuit, and declined to comment. The military service has said that operating the range wouldn't do any more than temporarily disrupt the whales.
