Halsey exhibit to shed light on two African nations
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts presents the two related photography exhibitions: Jonathan Torgovnik, "Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape" and Heather McClintock, "The Innocents: Casualties of the Civil War in Northern Uganda."
The photographs will be on display within The Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts. A reception at 5-7 p.m. Friday opens the exhibit, which will run through March 13.
At 3 p.m. Friday, the Halsey will host presentations by Jules Shell of Foundation Rwanda and featured photographer, Jonathan Torgovnik in the Simons Center for the Arts' Recital Hall.

'Whistler's Travels'
The Gibbes Museum of Art will present the work of renowned American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) in the exhibition "Whistler's Travels," in the Rotunda Galleries from Friday through May 16.
The exhibition features 21 etchings and three lithographs from the Gibbes permanent collection and a local private collection.
The etchings and lithographs in Whistler's Travels were executed during Whistler's excursions to the English countryside, France, Holland and Italy.

2010 Factor Prize
For the third year in a row, the Gibbes will award the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art to an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of the South.
Entries for the annual award and $10,000 cash prize can be made exclusively online at www.factorprize.org through Feb. 28 (the previous deadline was Jan. 30).
The award is designed to create an online archive of information about Southern artists that can be used by curators, collectors, academicians and the public.
The prize goes to an artist whose work demonstrates the highest level of artistic achievement in any media. The prize may be awarded to an artist who has already produced a body of significant work or whose work shows considerable promise.
Eligible artists are those who reside, work in or are from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia.
All artists who entered on the prize's Web site in 2009 are automatically registered for the 2010 award.
The review panel will select finalists in March with the winner being announced at the museum's annual meeting and celebration May 3. For more, call 722-2706.
Artwork for auction
The South Carolina Arts Foundation is looking for quality artwork to include in the South Carolina Art Auction, the centerpiece of the 2010 South Carolina Arts Gala, an evening celebration of the Elizabeth
O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards for the Arts on May 6 at the Columbia Museum of Art.
Interested artists should submit the required articles by Feb. 22 to Art Auction, S.C. Arts Foundation, 1800 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

Classes at Cone 10
If you've ever wanted to get your hands dirty with some clay, now is the time.
Winter session classes at Cone 10 Studios begin Feb. 1. They offer beginning through intermediate classes in wheel-thrown pottery and clay sculpture.
The studio offers time for students to work outside of class and high-fire reduction firing.
Class sizes are limited to provide space and individual instruction.
Course fees include glaze and firing. Clay and beginner's tools are extra. Course fees are either $190 or $210.

'1 x 1' show
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston, Redux Contemporary Art Center will be featuring a show of student and faculty work, "1 x 1."
"New works by all nine tenure studio art faculty are featured and each of those faculty members have selected one student. This exhibition is an opportunity for the faculty to mentor their chosen student as they transition from college to life as a professional artist. The show will be curated to highlight the achievements of the student body," explains Karen Ann Myers, executive director of Redux.
There will be an opening reception at 6-9 p.m. Friday at Redux, 136 St. Philip Street.
The public is invited and there will be free beverages and light hors d'oeuvres. The exhibition will run through March 6.
