Charleston Boat Show returns for 30th year

By Jack Hunter, Special to The Post and Courier
Thursday, January 21, 2010

'Do you want to go out on the boat?"

This distinctly Southern way of asking if someone would like to take a boating excursion is something I've heard a thousand times while growing up in this Lowcountry, where the Atlantic Ocean and so many lakes and rivers have provided countless hours of leisurely fun for generations.

This weekend, the 30th annual Charleston Boat Show will be at the Charleston Area Convention Center, where the latest goods of interest to boating enthusiasts will be on full display.

Past Boat Shows have drawn thousands of spectators, and this year's event promises to be just as popular.

Several hundred boats and vendors filled exhibition halls, a parking lot, sidewalks and the coliseum floor for last year's Charleston Boat Show at the North Charleston Convention Center. This year's event begins Friday.

Every type of boat imaginable will be featured: powerboats, sport cruisers, yachts, sport fishing boats, bass boats, bow riders, family cruisers. And many will be offered at discount prices.

In addition to the boats and boating-related items, there will be fishing clinics for both adults and children, jump castles and face painting. Food available will include Lowcountry Boil, Frogmore Stew, pulled pork sandwiches, boiled peanuts and more.

Charleston Boat Show organizers have teamed up with the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Show Producer Jacqui Bomar says, "We're asking people to bring five canned goods to the Show for $2 off the admission price of $8. There is so much need in our community that we really wanted to try and make a difference, especially since the show typically gets 8,000-10,000 attendees. If everyone brings 5 cans, that food will feed a lot of families in need."

Whether helping families or just satisfying your own boating needs, it might be worth checking out this weekend's Charleston Boat Show.

Also, in response to the tragedy in Haiti, Water Missions International will be on site to answer questions about their current relief efforts.
