Dog-sitting best present after pet dies

Sunday, January 17, 2010

I spent one of my best Christmases ever this past year. My dog, Gregory, died in November of cancer, and I was very depressed spending the holidays without a dog in my life.

The Saturday before Christmas, I was asked if I would mind baby-sitting a 4-year-old chocolate Lab over the Christmas holidays.

An answer to my prayers!

Louise Bavier of Charleston enjoyed dog-sitting Maddie over the Christmas holidays.

Maddie arrived at my house Dec. 23 and we rushed to the store to buy her a few presents.

Maddie is no Marley and doesn't appear to have any bad habits. She was content to stop and smell the flowers, and took her sweet time to enjoy the day.

At home, she was very happy lying on my deck, or in the yard to watch the world go by.

We went to the James Island County Park whenever I had the time, and even out to Seabrook to play on the beach. She loved it!

My cat and I fell in love with Maddie, and my cat even taught her how to purr. As the day neared for her to go home, I threatened to kidnap her and escape to Brazil. ... I didn't, however, knowing how much her owner would miss such a sweet dog.

I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present, and it taught me how much I missed having a dog in my life. I have since bought a 9-week-old female chocolate Lab puppy. I hope she turns out half as sweet as Maddie.
