SUNDAY
Trot for the Cure addresses canine health issues on Sunday
People aren't the only ones who suffer from cancer. Dogs do, too.
If you want to help find the cure, join the sixth annual Trot for the Cure this Sunday at Magnolia Plantation. Gates open at 11 a.m., and the trotters go at 11:30. While it is a numbered event, it is not a race. Bundle up, have fun with your pets and get answers to their health issues.
After a guided trot through the gardens, a panel of experts will be on hand to give a presentation on current canine cancer issues and answer questions. On hand will be Dr. Nicole Northrup, oncologist, University of Georgia; Dr. Marc Kent, neurologist, UGA; Dr. Anthony Moore, ophthalmologist, UGA; Dr. Perry Jameson, internist, Mount Pleasant; Dr. Kathryn Taylor, oncologist, Mount Pleasant; Dr. Allison Adams, cardiologist, Mount Pleasant; and Dr. Dennis Feinberg, immediate past chair, National Board of Medical Examiners, and past president, American Animal Hospital Association, Charleston.
The day's events also will feature dog dancing and tricks from the Dixie Dancing Dogs, barbecue from Southern Que-N-Stew and drawing that includes the "one hundred dollar hat," a straw hat filled with 100 $1 bills.
New to this year's Trot will be a dog entertainment contest presided over by local celebrity judges. Participants have 90 seconds to show off to win a spot on the local TV show "Lowcountry Live!" All event trotters, though, get a T-shirt and goody bag.
All of the proceeds will go to funding research at the UGA canine cancer unit.
Admission is a $30 donation at the gate. Magnolia Plantation is at 3550 Ashley River Road. Visit www.k9careunit.org.
