BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- December began with news that South Car-olina forward Mike Holmes would be out indefinitely because of an injury. January started with the end of Holmes' tumultuous career with the Gamecocks' basketball team.

Second-year coach Darrin Horn dismissed the junior Friday to end his rocky ride at the school.

"It's an internal team issue," said Horn, whose Gamecocks (8-4) host Baylor (10-1) today at noon (Fox Sports South). "For a period of about 18 months now he's had trouble doing what you have to do to be part of a program. It's not one particular thing."

USC looks a lot different entering 2010 than it did when the season began.

The Gamecocks now know they'll be without two of their top three scorers for the rest of the year.

"It doesn't make it easier, but things happen," Horn said. "I still think we can win games, but we've got to play well individually and collectively."

The physical 6-7 Holmes averaged 11 points and 4.8 rebounds in six games this season. The versatile 6-7 Dominique Archie, out with a knee injury, averaged 14.4 points and six rebounds in five games.

Holmes, a Bishopville native, was often hot-tempered on the floor -- and even more volatile off it.

teammate last week.

Horn announced Nov. 30 that Holmes would be out indefinitely after fracturing a bone near his eye.

The injury occurred while players were released for a couple of days for a Thanksgiving break. Horn said the injury happened while Holmes was "horsing around at home."

In the end, the dismissal comes as no surprise to those both inside and outside the program.

Horn said Holmes, the 2007 Mr. Basketball in the state, is in good academic standing. Holmes should be able to continue his basketball career elsewhere.
