Cougs' Buchanan outshines field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The College of Charleston men's swimming and diving team placed third at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships, finishing behind Davidson, while the women's team earned a seventh-place finish out of 12 teams with 196 points.
Senior Randy Buchanan earned his second consecutive CCSA men's outstanding swimmer award while Charleston's Mike Diamond earned co-men's diving coach of the year honors for the second straight season.
The Cougars men's program scored 752 points and finished in third behind Davidson's 907 points and Gardner-Webb's 758.
Over the course of the meet, Buchanan posted one of the most impressive individual performances of his career as he earned gold in the 200-yard individual medley (1:47.47), 100-yard breaststroke (54.48) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.01). His times in the first two of those events broke his own CCSA records.
With three NCAA "B" cuts, Buchanan will now await word on his qualification status for the NCAA Championships.
--Brothers Jonathan and Zachary Lierley finished 1-2 in individual points scored in the boys 15-18 division at the South Carolina Short Course State Swimming Championships last weekend.
Jonathan, 17, scored 92 points while Zachary, 15, totaled 73 to help the Mount Pleasant Swim Club boys to a third-place state finish with 558 1/2 points behind Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club (839) and Team Greenville (714 1/2).
MPSC teammate Michael Jessup scored 74 points to finish second in the boys 10-and-under division, and Dirk Bell, another MPSC swimmer, had 71 points to finish third in boys 13-14.
Chloe Stapleton placed third in girls 10-and-under, scoring 61 points, to help the MPSC girls finish second overall in the state. MPSC scored 429 points, trailing girls champion Y-Spartaquatics (1,343).
The Southern Marlins Racing Team placed fourth in the girls with 367 points, and the SMRT boys (152) were eighth.
