Bishops roll past Manning
The Bishop England girls' basketball team gained its 20th victory of the season with a 60-43 decision over Manning in the second round of the Class AA playoffs Friday night at Father O'Brien Gymnasium.
The Bishops have been a model of consistency the past four years with an 82-20 record during the stretch. Three times, the Bishops have tallied at least 20 wins.
Bishop England coach Paul Runey can sometimes be harsh when he critiques his team. But he had high praise for his players who built a 20-point lead after three quarters.
"Honestly, I thought we played really well," said Runey, whose team will be at home for a third-round playoff game Tuesday night.
"In the past, I've made it a point to point out our mistakes and flaws, but I was pleased with the way we played tonight. I saw Manning in a playoff game against Kingstree, and I saw them on tape. The more I watched on tape, the tighter I got."
The Bishops led 17-15 after one stop. Breanna Nelson hit three 3-point goals for the visiting Monarchs. But Mallory Molony & Crew took over in the second quarter, outscoring the Monarchs 16-5, to win going away.
Molony, who went over the 2,000-point mark for her career earlier this month, led the way with 18 points, 13 rebound and four steals.
Elizabeth Works was impressive at both ends of the floor with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Mary Wyman Moore earned praise from Runey with 14 points off the bench, including 10 in the first half.
Nelson finished with 17 points and Courtney Green added 11 for the Monarchs, who finished with a 14-14 record.
Manning (43): Breanna Nelson 17, Cooper 7, Mallett 4, Courtney Greene 11, Muldrow 2, White 2.
Bishop England (60): Grisillo 7, Breland 1, A. Corbett 6, Mary Wyman Moore 14, Mallory Molony 18, Elizabeth Works 14
Records: BE 20-3, M 14-14. Next: BE vs winner of Silver Bluff/Cheraw on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
